What the coconut is Malibu?

Malibu is the number one white rum-based coconut spirit in the world. But almost everyone knows it as the refreshing taste of summer. Which is no wonder why Malibu Original, a liqueur, made with white rum and coconut flavour is the main ingredient in cocktails like the Malibu Piña Colada, Malibu Bay Breeze and the Malibu Frozen Daiquiri. In fact, it’s said it was originally invented to make the Piña Colada easier to prepare. Or rather, more delicious!

But it’s not all about Malibu Original.

Malibu comes in lots of delicious flavours besides coconut. These include different fruits flavours like peach, strawberry, watermelon, pineapple, and passionfruit. All yummy in their own way and all embodying the spirit of summer.

So, when do you drink it?

Well, Malibu’s light and refreshing taste, and lower ABV than many other spirits, makes it perfect for easy and fun daytime sessions. Think casual hangouts with friends, everyday celebrations, picnics at the park, BBQs in summer, or any time of year.

And how do you drink it?

Ready for a history lesson? Don’t worry, we’ll keep it short.

The sunshine story of Malibu started in 1978 and was originally called Coco Rico. But in 1980 when Malibu launched it was the birth of an icon. People were amazed by its rich flavors and unique taste. It tasted like summer in a bottle and the potential was obvious – it needed to be brought to the wider world. In no time at all, Malibu earned the reputation as a fun and fresh brand that made people want to be a part of an easygoing way of life. And the now-classic white bottle was something that was never seen before.

Today, over 40 years later, Malibu is one of the world’s leading flavored spirits. And Malibu’s old slogan “It comes from paradise and tastes like heaven” still rings as true now as it did then.

So, where’s Malibu made?

For many years, the white rum used in Malibu was produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery on a beach in Barbados. But today, Malibu is blended and produced mostly in Canada, and we also do some of the production in the US and Spain, so it’s easier to get it out to the world as efficiently as possible.

And what’s Malibu made from?

Malibu is a liqueur made from a combination of white rum and different flavours. The white rum is distilled from a sweet syrup that’s made when refining sugarcanes (commonly known as molasses). The ingredients for the flavors are sourced from all around the world. We have long and strong relationships with all our suppliers to make sure that the products are the best possible quality.

Where do the coconuts come from?

The coconuts used to give Malibu Original its distinct flavor is partly sourced from local farming communities in the Philippines.
