tools you'll need
Glassware
We prefer using a highball glass, which is more classic, or a hurricane glass, which is more fun! That said, you can use any glass you have in your kitchen, as long as it fits all the ingredients and the ice.
Jigger or Measurement Tool
This ensures we get the measurements for each ingredient just right, ensuring the correct balance of flavours. If you don’t have a pro one, just use a 30 ml / 1 oz shot glass instead.
Bar Spoon
This is a stirred cocktail, so a bar spoon or cocktail stirrer with long handle is perfect for making sure you get all those delicious ingredients to blend perfectly.
Knife and Cutting Board
This is for slicing the pineapple garnish. Make sure you don’t use a blunt knife and ensure the cutting board is dry, so nothing slips. As always, be careful.
Our top tips for creating the malibu black bahama mama
Make fresh juice
For this cocktail, we suggest making your own fresh juices, or opting for fresh juice from the store. Trust us, it’s worth it. Just check the sugar content on the back of the packaging, some juices are sweeter than others.
Pre-chill your glass
We always say pre-chilling your glass for 10-15 mins in the freezer can make all the difference. It keeps the cocktail cooler for longer and makes every sip as yummy as the first.
Experiment with garnishes
A slice of pineapple isn’t just for looks, it elevates the drink and gives it a fresh tropical taste. The mint spring’s bright aroma also balances out the citrusy and tangy flavours perfectly. But free to experiment with other garnishes, like a slice of orange, a lime wedge or even a maraschino cherry.

Where does this cocktail come from?
The traditional Bahama Mama cocktail has its roots in the Caribbean, where it’s loved for its fruity and exotic flavours. The introduction of the darker, richer Malibu Black adds a new dimension to this classic, enhancing its flavour profile that complements the sweetness of the fruit juices.

This cocktail stands out with its use of Malibu Black rum, which adds a richer and bolder flavour compared to the traditional white rum.
-
Definitely! We think Malibu Original is delicious, and it gives it a lighter more coconutty taste. That said, in this particular drink, Malibu Black offers a unique depth that enhances the Bahama Mama’s flavour profile.
-
Absolutely! Simply replace the Malibu Black rum with coconut water or a non-alcoholic rum alternative. You’ll still enjoy the tropical flavours without the alcohol, making it suitable for all guests.
-
To tone down the sweetness, we suggest reducing the amount of grenadine or use fresh pineapple and orange juices instead of sweetened, store-bought versions. You can also add a splash of soda water for a lighter finish.
-
We recommend using a highball or hurricane glass. These shapes showcase the vibrant colours and allow enough room for ice and garnishes, enhancing the overall presentation.
-
Definitely! Feel free to experiment with mango or passion fruit for an extra tropical twist. This cocktail is versatile, so let your creativity flow.
-
Pretty much any occasion that calls for a tropical vibe. We usually enjoy it during beach-side hangs, summer barbecues, or even backyard parties with friends. It’s super versatile and always a crowd-pleaser.
